MAIN HISTORY OF PIONEER
Pioneer Corps units are intended to provide disciplined and well trained manpower, where civilian labour is either not available or its employment is not desirable for reasons of security. They may also be employed as guards and escorts for Headquarters, Installations of ammuition trains & convoys. The origin of the Pioneer Corps dates back to 1758 in Madras where the first Pioneer Companies was formed. It was having 3 regiments viz. Madras Pioneers, Bombay Pioneers, Sikh Pioneer and lastly Hazara Pioneers. The Pioneer Corps was re-raised during World War-II in the following rob:
a) To provide semi skilled labour to work with Engineer units or tasks such as demolition, construction of roads, tracks bridges, defences & water supply.
b) To provide unskilled labour at store handlying installations such as Engineer, Army Service Corps, AOCV & AMC.
The re-organization commenced on 24/6/1940 at Jhelum (now in Pakistan) is thereafter become Auxillary Pioneers Corps w.e.r. 25/11/1941 and became the Indian Auxillary Pioneer Corps with effect from 13/10/42. In 1943 it moved to Jalna and redesignated as Auxiliary Pioneer Corps is 25/11/1941 is being celebrated as the Raising day of the Pioneer Corp on 28/03/1948 the training centre moved from Jalna to Mathura and threafter it was moved to Nainital on 24/08/1954. Thereafter it has moved to Alwar (Rajasthan) and finally moved to Bangalore (hebbal) in 1975 and thereafter to Agram in 1992.
